These sections include the Sunny Isle signal light intersection, Sunny Isle to Barren Spot, and Sunny Isle to Ricardo Richards/Sunny Acres. Other sections, such as Barron Spot to the La Reine Signal light, will be paved as part of Phase 2. Phase 1 of the Downtown Christiansted Road Repairs project, performed by VI Paving, has also made significant strides. The roads being paved for this project are Queen Street, Hill Street, East Street, Prince Street, and Market Street. Currently, the southern portion of those roads—particularly Queen Street, Hill Street, and East Street—has been completely repaired. Weather permitting, this project has an estimated completion date of August 2024. Phase 2 will include New Street, West Street, Smith Street, Strand Street, Queen Cross Street, and King Street. The Ethel McIntosh Memorial Drive, also known as Mahogany Road, and Airport Road projects are also coming to fruition. Both projects are currently in the solicitation phase, and awards are anticipated in the next thirty (30) days. “We are thrilled to see these projects realized as our major thoroughfares need attention,“ said DPW Commissioner Derek Gabriel. “Our commitment is to keep this momentum territory-wide while we have the resources available.” The department urges motorists to follow all safety controls and directives from on-site flaggers throughout this reconstruction period.
