In addition to the official welcome session in the Northwest Wing of the Great Hall, the St. Croix campus hosted a Cultural Party, a Down on the Corner social and an Alumni Give Back activity in the Student Center. Speaking at a breakfast for new students in the Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas, Associate Campus Ad- ministrator for Student Affairs Dr. Doris Battiste assured new students that UVI administrators “are here to guide you, advise you and help you.” In his remarks, outgoing St. Thomas Vice President of the UVI Student Government Association St. …

Speaking at a breakfast for new students in the Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas, Associate Campus Ad- ministrator for Student Affairs Dr. Doris Battiste assured new students that UVI administrators “are here to guide you, advise you and help you.” In his remarks, outgoing St. Thomas Vice President of the UVI Student Government Association St. Clair Hodge told new students to take part in the SGA elec- tions that will be held in September. UVI President Dr. David Hall called UVI a “wonder- ful place” and said he is proud to be the fifth president of the University. He implored students to “reflect deeply upon this day,” saying that “an authentic partnership of success” now exists between new students and the Uni- versity, wherein promises have been made and something of value is to be exchanged. “We will work hard to make sure that your experience at UVI will be a rewarding experience,” President Hall said. “We ask that you make a promise to yourselves and Alumni Breakfast Honors Four Honorees at the 2010 Alumni Breakfast are, from left, Cornel A. M ore than 90 people came out on Saturday, July 24th, for the University of the Virgin Islands Alum- ni Association St. Thomas-St. John Chapter’s 8th Annual Alumni Recog- nition Award Breakfast on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. St. Thomas-St. John Chapter Vice President Pamela Toussaint (‘98, ‘05) welcomed guests as the Superior Court Rising Stars Steel Orchestra played several musical selections. The Alumni Association presented International Capital and Management Company President Cornel A. Williams (‘87) with the Alumni Honor Award. Associate Attorney Joss N. Springette (‘00) and Guy H. Benjamin Elementary School Principal Dionne A. Wells (‘03) re- ceived the Alumni Horizon Award. Court Administrator of the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands Glendia B. Caines (‘77, ‘87) received the Alumni Award of Excellence. University of the Virgin Islands President Dr. David Hall lauded the honorees during his remarks, which he said were crafted based on the legal “Best Evidence Rule.” Dr. Hall said UVI alumni present the best evidence that the University of the Virgin Is- lands is producing accomplished professionals. “The people that we honor this day are the best evi- dence that we can produce individuals who can excel in the fields of business and law and education … individuals who have excelled in areas that are so critical to the future of the Virgin Islands.” “If we have been able to do it in the past, we can do it in the future,” Dr. Hall said. “I recognize and applaud them because they are examples of the case we are mak- ing in the territory and throughout the world. At UVI, the rate of completion for students who go on to pursue their Ph.D.s is 90 percent. “That is the best evidence that we are doing some- thing wonderful at this University, that we produce stu- dents who compete and compete well,” Dr. Hall said. The Alumni Honor Award recognizes the significant contributions made over a number of years by university of the Virgin Islands alumni in their local communities. The Alumni Award of Excellence celebrates the specific, recent accomplishments of a UVI graduate within the 12 months prior to the nomination deadline in March. The Alumni Horizon Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of UVI alumni early in their careers. ... UVI Trustee Donald Sussman hosted the event at his residence. About 50 people attended, including the Honorable Donna M. Christensen, Johnny Taylor (Thurgood Marshall College Fund President and CEO), Joan Harrigan Farrelly, Ian (‘88) and Averil (‘88) Tomlinson, General Sam Ebbesen, Dwayne Petersen (‘09) and Dr. Wayne Archibald (‘97). President Hall engaged alumni and members of the Virgin Islands community residing on the mainland and shared his vision for the University. Trenton Marsh, who in 2004 be- came the first African-American male commencement speaker at Georgetown University, motivated students with a high-energy talk. More than 100 students attended the Alumni Give Back activity on the St. Croix campus, where Dr. Rod- erick Moorehead (‘71), Dr. O. Anne Treasure (‘86), Ian Tomlinson (‘88), Suzette Bloodman (‘97, ‘01), Marthious Clavier (’02, ’09) and Derval Prince (’02,’09, ’10) served as panelists. ...
