UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION Authorizing the approval of a Master of Science Degree in Marine and Environmental Science WHEREAS, the University of Virgin Islands (UVI) is committed to educating professionals capable of addressing environmental issues of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean region, and its strategic plan includes serving the advanced educational needs of marine and environmental science professionals in the Virgin Islands, and WHEREAS, the proposed Master of Science Degree in Marine and Environmental Science program is a collaboration between UVI Division of Science and Mathematics, the Center for Marine and Environmental Science (CMES), and the Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR), and WHEREAS, a feasibility study demonstrated local demand for professionals trained in marine and environmental science and natural resource management in Territorial and Federal agencies, academia, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector, and WHEREAS, a market survey of potential students demonst …

UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION Authorizing the approval of a Master of Science Degree in Marine and Environmental Science WHEREAS, the University of Virgin Islands (UVI) is committed to educating professionals capable of addressing environmental issues of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean region, and its strategic plan includes serving the advanced educational needs of marine and environmental science professionals in the Virgin Islands, and WHEREAS, the proposed Master of Science Degree in Marine and Environmental Science program is a collaboration between UVI Division of Science and Mathematics, the Center for Marine and Environmental Science (CMES), and the Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR), and WHEREAS, a feasibility study demonstrated local demand for professionals trained in marine and environmental science and natural resource management in Territorial and Federal agencies, academia, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector, and WHEREAS, a market survey of potential students demonstrated local, regional, and national demand for a Masters degree program in Marine and Environmental Science at UVI, and WHEREAS, this graduate program links the University with other institutions engaged in marine and environmental research and natural resource management, and WHEREAS, this graduate program integrates research and teaching elements in the University, and WHEREAS, this graduate program improves competitiveness to acquire Federal research grants, and WHEREAS, this graduate program will be ongoing with a new cohort of approximately 10 students beginning every year, and WHEREAS, the graduate program will serve both the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses through the use of video-conferencing capabilities, when appropriate, and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY AS FOLLOWS: 1. That the Master of Science Degree in Marine and Environmental Science be approved as a cohort driven degree, and 2. That this resolution shall become effective November 11, 2006. CERTIFICATION The undersigned hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and exact coy of a resolution of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands and adopted at its meeting on Saturday, November 11, 2006, as recorded in the minutes of the said meeting.
