Collens, acting Superinten- dert of \ :riculture for the Leeward [slends, has recently forwarced an in- teresting repert on his visit to Tortola and other Vicein Islands during last Jure. In tus report reference is made to the ocecu reuce locally of marketable sponges. Saveral ty:. es have been found growing in shallow waer, but only one, the reef sponge, is re :arded as being of any value. Dredging in leep water, however, might reveal the occu.rence of the Velvet spoage. The reef sponge occurs in iso- lated pieces ¢ ttached to coral, ete.. and can always be r-ocognized by the glossy, vel- vety, black ind smooth skin, somewhat cone-sh. ped with large osculi. In March 1918, a Greek exploiter= searched ar>uad the shores of Peter Is- land and No manp Island, and his highest daily haul was between 300 and 400 spoages, ac:ording to the report under notice. These were hooked up or grained in shallow weater and dived for in the deeper parts. Specimens have been se- cured, and i is hoped these will be for- warded tor co imerecial valuation at the time of their collection the Greek ex- ploiter was giving 3 cents asponge —an absurdly low fizure if the sponges are of any real comrercial value. There is but little doubt thar the cul- tivation of sponges, by means of cut- tings attached tocement dises, could be carried on successfully in certain areas of shallow water in the Virgin Islands.
