A eocnero who was not permitted so + withdraw savings funds in his wife namne {rom the Credito & Ahorro Pon- e2no, in Porce, on Tuesday started a run on the savings departmeni of that bank during which approximarely 500 of the Eanks 5,000 savings account were withdrawn. The cochero was told that his wite had to accompany him to the bank and approve the withdrawal or else that he would have to present a power of Attorney. He then bocame abusi.e and declared that he ~ould not get the money because the bank was not solveut. . He left the bank greatly execited and inside of thirty minutes reiurned with a score of coachmen and other savings account depositors who demanded their {m iney. : Aithougn the bank officials and em- ploy~es and other businessmen of Ponce tried to explain the situation and re- assured the depositors, many of them insisted, in their excitement. o be paid. This was done and for some time the savings funds withdrawals were heavy. Whiie these withdrawals were being made merchants and others were making heavy deposits of cash to show their confidence in the bank which is con- sidered among the most substantial and conservative in the island. Before the day was over many of those who had m de withdrawals re- turred to deposit their funds and a notice posted by the bank that it would remain open until 9.00 P M. to pay all depositors tended to quiet the more fearrul. | Before the usual closing time came 4 practically normal conditions had been | re-established.
