It will be remembered that mails for Porto Rico and the States are being made up for dispatch by her as well as the St. Thomas mails. The S. €. Bridgetown sailed from New York on Saturday evening, April ist., having 19 tons of cargo for Frederik- sted and 65 tons for Christiansted. CAPTAIN OF WHALER TO MAKE ST. THOMAS HEADQUARTERS. On Sunday last the American whaler **Wanderer,’’ Captain A. F. Edwards, of New Bedford, Mass., arrived off this port for mails from the States. The “““7anderer’’ did not cast anchor but kept cruising up and down while Captain Edwards with a few men landed to procure the mails, and were received on the King’s Wharf by Collector of Cus- toms Boardmann, Dr. Turnipseed, Cap- tain Fisher and Mr. George Levi, the energetic senior partner of the St. Tho- mas Ship Brokers’ Association. The ‘““Wanderer,”’” which is a vessel of some 288 tous and carries a crew of 31 men, nearly all of whom are Portuguese, was out from his home port, New Bedford, fully one year, having lett that port, on a whaling expedition on March 15, 1921 She scoured the North and South Atlan- tic in search of whiales and secured 85 sperms ranging from 25 to in length, and from them x~erc aned ‘3,000 galldas of oil Captain Edwards was so pleased with the appearance of the island and with tho Wospitality extended to him that he has decided to make his headguarters at St. Thomas in he future. , Before leaving he presented Niessrs. ¢ Toardman, Levi, Tarnipseed and Fishegp —-each, with a unique scuvenir, 11 the form of a whale’s tooth. Messrs, Pesquera and Berry who came ™ up here on Sunday last fronl Porto Ricoe have started on their duties’in the most enlightened manner, and their foresight in calling a meeling of the bay rum man- ufacturers on Tuesday afternoon has met with general approval. The terrible plight in which the bay ;om manofacturers are placed thru the forcing of prohibition on us was freely discussed by the gentlemen whe met the agents, : Messrs, Pesquera and Berry, were very sympathetic and it was decided that the j panufacturers should file their case with the proper authorities with the request that bay rum for export to foreign coun- tries be not denatured. —lbid. . Francis, Burnet, Kuniz, Holst, De Yongh and Moorehead took part. After these gendemen had expressed their sentiments, the Hon. Judge Thiele, Chairman of the Council, declared the first discussion eclosed and the bill was re- ferred to a committee of 7 for report. The seeond item.
