Exports of sugar were expected to continue dur- ing April and May. Sugar from the island Guadeloupe is beine produced for exportation to France and a sample of it has heen forwarded to the' Imperial Commissiorner of Agricul ture by J. Sidney Dash, director of the Station Agronomique of Guadeloupe. Mr Dash says: it is quite a good sample of what is known in the sugar market as “*Plantation White’’. He also considers that nowhere in the West Indies are the soil and the climatic conditions more favorable for cane culti- vation than in the French colonies, and that planters and sugar manufacturers there are now fully alive to the benefits that will acerue to the industry from in- creased care in the cultivation of the cane and the manufacture of sugar.—lbid. - NOTICE. There are over one thousand young men and women of Porto Rico enrolled in the summer schools which are now in session at the Unigersity of Porto Rico, and the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, at Mayaguez. Five hundred “and forty of these are as- pirants for the rural teachers certifi- cate, and 480 are ®aspirants for the English graded teichers license. Be sides these there is a group of students enrolled in the summer school v/ho are completir g their courses in technical and mechanic subjects. The Department of Edueation was obliged to issue some 300 provisional li- censes last year because so many teach- ers had left the island or taken up other lines~of work in the island, but accord- ing to present calculation -here will ® be more than enough teachers to cover the needs of the school, and it will not be necessary to issue any provisional licenses.— Porto Rico Progress, 15th July. FIRST SUGAR FROM PANAMA. The first exportation of sugar from Panama was made this year.
