UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION PURPOSE: To approve the addition of an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree to the authorized degree inventory of the University of the Virgin Islands. WHEREAS, the faculty, administrators of the Academic Affairs Component, and the President’s Cabinet of the University of the Virgin Islands are proposing to add an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree to the authorized degree inventory of the University of the Virgin Islands in order to enable the University to offer a new category of academic services, and WHEREAS, the goal of augmenting services that engage the University in the development of the territory is identified in the 2000-2005 Strategic Plan, and the A.A.S. degree is included as a possible specific strategy for achieving that goal, and WHEREAS, the addition of an A.A.S. …

UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION PURPOSE: To approve the addition of an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree to the authorized degree inventory of the University of the Virgin Islands. WHEREAS, the faculty, administrators of the Academic Affairs Component, and the President’s Cabinet of the University of the Virgin Islands are proposing to add an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree to the authorized degree inventory of the University of the Virgin Islands in order to enable the University to offer a new category of academic services, and WHEREAS, the goal of augmenting services that engage the University in the development of the territory is identified in the 2000-2005 Strategic Plan, and the A.A.S. degree is included as a possible specific strategy for achieving that goal, and WHEREAS, the addition of an A.A.S. degree responds to input from stakeholders in the community and advances the vision and goals of the 2002-2005 Strategic Plan by engaging the University in meeting the developmental needs of the Virgin Islands workforce, and WHEREAS, the A.A.S. degree will provide the framework for the University of the Virgin Islands to increase the educational capability of its citizens, to support workforce development, and to work in partnership with industrial/technical segments of the economy, and WHEREAS, the A.A.S. degree represents the completion of study in an occupational/ vocational program; and specific A.A.S. degree programs to be developed will provide preparation for technical employment which supports diversification of the VI economy, and will reduce'the need to import technical labor, and WHEREAS, the availability of the A.A.S. degree may be limited in duration and/or may be cohort oriented in order to respond efficiently to changing needs, and WHEREAS, accreditation standards and practices in other institutions were considered in the development of the proposed degree framework, and WHEREAS, the proposed degree framework provides a general framework within which specific degree programs can be developed, and Board of Trustees Resolution~A.A.S. Degree Page 2 WHEREAS, all A.A.S. degree programs will include, at minimum, 62 credits of which at least 22 credits will be selected from the UVI general education components of the B.A. or B.S. degrees, and WHEREAS, all A.A.S. degree programs will contain college level courses in oral and written English and a minimum of one course each in the areas of mathematics, science, social science, and the humanities. WHEREAS, the faculty of the University of the Virgin Islands approved this proposal on September 6, 2001, and WHEREAS, the UVI Cabinet approved this proposal on September 10, 2001, NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The Board of Trustees approve the addition of an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree to the authorized degree inventory of the University of the Virgin Islands effective October 13, 2001. CERTIFICATION The undersigned does hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and exact copy of the resolution of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands adopted at its meeting on October 13, 2001 and recorded in the minutes of said meeting.
