The totality of eflect in the Upiversal special, *'The Virgin of Stumbul,”” is that of pieturesque grandeur. It is conceived and executed by mind- fascinated by the mystery of oriental existence, That many-sided, many-colofed life grows in gorgeous cos- tumes and decorative backgrounds. The color and gloom, the riches and poverty, the juxury and wretchedness of that older and narrower part of Constantinople known as Stambou! are skiifully visualized, They arouse sensations of romantic wonder as pie- tures. The Uaivarsal pieture is a fine spectacle of geng ous treatment, with stirring ensembles and a dash of melodrama. . : Priscilla Dean impersonates a bea_ntlful beggar girl, an unveiled seeker of alms in the streets, whose eharacter has rer_named clean. Her characterization has the splendid animation of a bright American girl _wbose energy of vouth is. ballasted by brains. While this may be remote from the oriental, it is very LGttractive, true to the environ- ment i; Wallace Beery as a wealthy Sheik with a chn.)ce_harem. He is decidedly repre- sentative of the combined austerity and se.nsuahty.ot oriental fanaticism. The balance of the cast is satisfactory without exception. With so much to its eredit as a careful and interesting production. “‘The Virgin of Stamboul’ should be as favorably received elsewhere as it was by a crowded houserat the Broadway Theatre.
