Over those 47 years, I have read literally thousands of books and magazines. I have always wanted to visit the place in Washington DC, where they produced all of those magnificent books and to have the opportunity to meet some of the people who are responsible for generating those books and magazines that I have been enjoying for so many years. On Wednesday, March 22, of this year, that long awaited for opportunity finally came. With the help of Ms. Gittens, I was able to obtain an appointment to visit the National Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. My husband and I then took a taxi to their location and when we arrived, the security guard greeted us warmly and presented us with our already prepared name tags. The security guard introduced us to our tour guide Ms. MaryBeth Wise, who is also the national consultant to our Virgin Islands Regional Library. MaryBeth then gave us a brief history of the library and outline for us where she will be taking us and then commenced the tour. She took us to every department in the library and introduced us to the employees. (Continue on Page 2) MS. CARTY'S VISIT TO NATIONAL LIBRARY SERVICE NEWSLETTER VIRGIN ISLANDS REGIONAL LIBRARY SUMMER 2017 MS. CARTY'S VISIT TO NLS (Continued from Page 1) I had the chance to touch the many shelves that were stack from top to bottom with books including some of the very old books and outdated machines. We met several of the narrators, along with many of those who write the annotation for the BARD books Being there at the library was an exciting time for me, I felt like a little kid in a candy store just meeting people and asking ques- tions. Being at the library and enjoying the fabulous and informa- tive tour was certainly a dream come true for me for I have want- ed to do that for a very long time. The tour lasted about two hours and was well worth it. While the tour was in progress we had the privilege to meet the Director for the National Library Service, Karen A. Keninger. By the time it came to leave we had worked up an appetite walking in and out of offices and up and down stairs so we were ready for lunch. Therefore we asked the guard to call a taxi to take us back to our hotel, where we ate in a very delicious and filling lunch. What is BARD? • BARD is a National Library Service (NLS) free download service. • Over 94,657 books and over 121 magazine titles are available; books are added weekly. • Available to active individual Talking Book Program patrons and institutional account-holders may also be eligible. How do I register? Go to https://nlsbard.loc.gov/VI1A/ApplicationInstructions.html to apply for a BARD login. You must have active Talking Book Program service and an email address of your own or one you can use. (Continue on Page 3) WHAT IS BARD AND WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH IT? VIRGIN ISLANDS REGIONAL LIBRARY SUMMER 2017 (Continued from Page 2) What do I use to store the book or magazine? After you download your book or magazine from https://nlsbard.loc.gov/ login depending on which machine you are using, you may store the book or magazine on a digital cartridge, flash drive, or other storage device (i.e., flash card). If using the NLS machine, then use Option 1 or Option 2 (be- low). If using a commercial machine, call us to find out which option is best. We do not supply any of these storage media; you will need to pur- chase them. Option 1: NLS-type digital cartridge. Available for purchase from partici- pating vendors. If we download the books we can use the green cartridge or supply a peach cartridge. The cartridge must be checked out and can be reloaded many times once it is returned. Contact information is provid- ed upon request. You will need a cable to connect the cartridge to your computer during download/transfer process. Option 2: Standard USB flash drive (also called thumb drive, jump drive). Available at most large retail stores or electronics stores. Some flash drives work better than others with this player; contact us for more information. Can I store more than one book on the same (cartridge, flash drive, other device)? Yes, but if you are using the NLS DTBM. to play your downloads and you received your machine before about mid-September 2009 you must have a software update in order to use Bookshelf feature to move between books. You can get the latest update at http:// www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM/ If you have this update, you can access the Bookshelf feature on your DTBM by pressing and holding Play/ Stop key until it says “Bookshelf,” then using FF and RW keys to move forward and backward between titles. When you reach the title you want, press Play. VIRGIN ISLANDS REGIONAL LIBRARY SUMMER 2017
