IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MAY 4. 1994 Mr. DE 1.t.G0 introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Natural Resources A BILL To designate the "Christiansted Bandstand" at the Chris- tiansted National Historic Site, St. Croix, Virgin Islands, as the "Peter G. Th''rland, Sr., Bandstand". 1 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa- 2 tires of the United States of America in Congress assembled, 3 SECTION 1. FINDINGS. 4 The Congress rinds that- 5 (1) Peter Gregory Thurland, Sr., was born on 6 February 19, 1892, in the town of Christiansted on 7 the island of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands; r o o aro S r a 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 1968, at which time he turned over the leadership 23 position of the hand to his son; and 24 (8) it is a fitting tribute to his leadership, cour- 25 age, and contributions to the community of St. Croix a 2 (2) he excelled in playing the trombone and baritone horn and dedicated his life to attaining ex- cellence in music; (3) shortly after the transfer of the Virgin Is- lands from Denmark to the United States, Peter G. Thurland, Sr., joined the United States Navy on June 12, 1917, and served as a member of the Navy Band; (4) he worked on the construction and design of the Christiansted Bandstand, where he played with the Christiansted Naval Band at their monthly NH certs until he was honorably discharged in Septem- ber 1921; (5) he is renowned in his native Virgin Islands as a master craftsman and a skillful cabinetmaker; (6) in 1938, Peter G.
