I'he Mayaguez incident resulted from a clash between Republicans and Union- ists. Although no reason has been given tor tneir clashing it is understoud thart, speaking purely politically, the Unionists and Repubiicans have no particular high regard for each other this year in Maya- guez. When most of the erowd had dispersed there were 31 Republicans and two Unionists reporied injured. The weeks between now and Novem- ber 2nd are going o be filied with spirited campaigning and there is said to be con- siderable uneasiness over the possibility of the struggle getting out ot control. In some sec-ions there is a three-corn- ed fight between Unionists, Republicans and Socialists. Klsewhere the contest is more simpie. But nowhere does the campaign lack intensity. The outcome in San Juan seems to be giving a good deal of concern to all par- ties. Both Unionists and Republicans claim they will win the city. One of them may be mistaken. But a Unionist leader is reported as admitting the other day that in his opini 'n the contest 1n San Juan wes so close that the vote of the registered continental Americans might swing it either way. So fai there has been no serious charge oi the misuse of campaign funds. But the Unionists are reported (o have all the money they want and it is said that in one district that has given them con- siderable worry that $6 a vore will carry the district. There are a good many voters in the district, but the campaign fund is said to be sufficiently large to cover ail legitimate expenses. Which only shows how prices have gone up.
