The Bill reads as follows: Colonial Council Bill No. 24. Fourth Council, First Session 1923-1924 DRAFT OF AN ORDINANCE providing a schedule of fezs jor use of slanghter housein St. Croue. Be it enacted by the Colunial Council in session asscmbled: That 1. The fee now charged for use of the slaughter houses shall be such as are herein provided and pavabls in advance before the time of inspection of the animal: For slaughtering of cattle......Frs. 1.25 per head For slaughtering of sheep and gl .., " U v For slaughtering . e ~ B 2. All fees accruing hercunder shall be payable at the banitation O fice and be by them paid into the Municipal Treasury eaca month. 3. Before in- troducing the ordinance | :sk permission to make one ortwo corrections in the draft. The Ordinance was drawn up in athurry and the enacting clause was left out- 1 ask permission to h:ve it inserted. Permission was granted and the corree- tions were made. : 2nd Member for Christiarsted Town ‘Canegata)in introducing the Ordinance sald,—Mr. Chairman. The cutcome of this Ordinance is aiready knowr as 1 made reference to it at the lust meeting of the Council. 1 hoped .hcn that the ~.matter would have been acted upon by the Ixecutive Departme.: bat as they did not see fit to take it up 1 drew up this draft. 1 want to thank the Members of the Municipal Commitize who have kindly consented to it altnough it has npot been ftormally presertei to them. This drart provides tor thz payment of a fee for every head of animal butechered instead of a yearly fee. If you take the fignres quoted here and the amount paid per annum you will see that there is not much ditference. 2nd Member for Christianst -4 Country District (Berg) remarked: .Ir. Chair- man. 1 am in sympathy with the idea of everybody payving some contribution to the Government for service or facili- ties they may receive, but is this a uni- form system? Do vendors in the fish and other public markets built and kept clean by Government pay a fee? The Chairman: No. Member Berg continuing,—Well they shou.d coatribure something toward the upkeep of the Government. We do not know how soon the taxpayers in the United States wiil refuse to send money down here tc run this Governmeat. The Yonorable 3rd Member tor Chris- tiansted Town got very impatient. In my opinion this Counci. has siways been composed of men of different ideas, We cannot expect every one to have the satre opinion. We must differ at times. What I want to point out is that a slaughter house and the selling of fish in the market are not the same. Tlhe meat vendor has a perfect right to the market. _he public market is tree.
