Mr. Ashiey L. Totien; a na- | tive of Saint Croix and an old friend of | this paper, advocates the establishment | of a Wage Board for the purpose of me- | ditating, regulating and incidentally ad- | justing a current scale of wages. Such a | board, commission or whatever it be | called, could undoubtedly serve a valua- ble end if properly used, and it has oc- curred to us many a time that it is just such.a body that is needed at the present time when because of inability to meet on common ground there is a deadlock in one of the most important questions, the agricultural labor question. Os course, such a board, should consist of neatral parties not animated by partisan mctives of any kind, but having due con- S L. CHRQIX AV 1S sideration for the rights and welfare of both sides and be kept posted with the of ecommodities, wages and other data to enable a just ruling in regard to local economics. Just like the tariff commis- sion fixed the duties and jother taxes, having the material for a competent de- cision, so such aboard as that in question would regula‘e minimum svages which would so be so f irly adjusted that no- body would ever want to kick against the decisions of the board from which there would also be no appeal. The Co- lonial Council at its last meeting is un- derstood to have had the bringing into existence of a commission to serve a similar purpose under consideration, and it would be well if it succeeds, and moulds its commission i to one of real usefulness, having the authority and recognition of Government which would be informed as to the working of the . same, and as to the action of this board in regard to regulation of wagzes from time to time. Dear Sir: I read My. Totten’s article in your issue of today’s date with interest. As Mr. Totten speaks of the deporta tion of aliens, it might not be amigs to remind the Government that at this pres- ent moment there are aliens here who are "acting in a manner they dare not attempt in their home. Wkat? Spread the seed of unrest among the people? Write sarcastically, witaout reason whatever, of the Judges? Try to defy the decision of the Courts? All these and more. when in reality they are supposed to preach Christ. The public has been enduring a lot of this stuff recently, and hopes that the Government will use its power to deport such parties. YOUTHFUL COUPLE MARRIED. MCFARLANE-OVESEN. Miss Julia Ovesen, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Ovesen form- erly of Christiansted St: Croix, became the bride of Mr. Alva McFarlane of Fred- eriksted St."Croix, on Monday Sevt. 19th. The youthful couple disappeared imme- diately after the ceremony and could not be found for several days, until a most elaborate receptinn given at Mr. and Mrs. Gotleff Hoffman’s home was in pro- gress. The chief speakers of the evening were Mr. l.ouis Fair of St. Thomas &n old and well tried friend®f the bride’s father, Mr. Alex. Mclntosh and Mr. Ashley Totten, who advised the couple to follow the ex- ample of their parents, and wished them “Good Luck”’. = The bridegroom’s reponse was a source of amusement to the guests who were delighted to hear how he won his little beauty. : It seems, according to his story, he first saw her picture before bis depart- ure from the islands, and determined from (that time to win her On his arrival to this country he set out for the Ovesen home, and got ac quainted Miss Ovesen is an American born and one of those teasing girls who knows exactly how to kid a fellow along and prove his sincerity. But Mr. Alva would not be kidded, and got down to the cold hard facts. which resulted in their happy union.
