Apparently these oval masses do not tSuch each other but are arranged in sonewhat regular order over the rac2 of the sun which is less brignc. l[a facc it seems that they are distinguishable solely because they stand out against the comparatively dark solar b-ckground, clouds against the sky ; Scientists believe thai these liitie bod- * les are made up of still smaller forms and that they are the principal source of the solar light and hest. The re- lative dark background—presumably the surface of the sun—radiates but little light or hegat. The sunlight which reaches us is in reality diluted light—- the intense light 2mitted by these bod- jes diluted by the lesser light of the backgroygnd against which they appear to abour one-fifth of its original bril- liance. —~The Pathfinder. ’ .
