Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources. - From the National Register of Historic Places site: http://www.nps.gov/nr/about.htm The Multiple Property Submission (MPS) listings records are unique in that they capture historic properties that are related by theme, general geographic area, and/or period of time. The MPS is the current terminology for submissions of this kind; past iterations include Thematic Resource (TR) and Multiple Resource Area (MRA). Historic properties nominated under the MPS rubric will contain individualized nomination forms and will be linked by a Cover Sheet for the overall group. Historic properties nominated under the TR and MRA rubric are nominated as part of the whole group and will contain portions of nominations that come directly from the group Cover Sheet. MPS records from US Territories, on the whole, are comprised of nomination forms (signed, legal documents verifying the status of the properties as listed in the National Register) photographs, maps, correspondence, memorandums, and ephemera which document the efforts to recognize individual properties as part of a theme, general geographic area, and/or period of time that are historically significant to their community and/or state. Arrangement: The Multiple Property Submission listings records are arranged alphabetically by multiple property name. Therein individual properties within the group are arranged alphabetically by Resource Name. For nominations with the MPS moniker, researchers will find the physical files arranged in the following way: Nomination Form, Photographs, Maps, Correspondence, and then Other documentation. For nominations with the TR or MRA moniker, researchers will find files arranged in the following way: Photocopied portions of the Nomination Form from the Cover Sheet, photographs, and in some instances maps however maps for TR/MRA are generally stored with the Cover Sheet.
