January 8 U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has proclaimed January 2025 as a pivotal month dedicated to causes that impact the lives of Virgin Islanders. This month will highlight key celebrations emphasizing faith, community, social justice, and academic excellence. In observance of former President Jimmy Carter’s life, Governor Bryan has amended Title 1, Chapter 11, Section 171 of the Virgin Islands Code and pursuant to 4 U.S.C.S. § 7, consistent with President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.’s Executive Order issued on December 30, 2024, do hereby proclaim: all flags shall be flown at half-staff at Government House and upon all public buildings and grounds, throughout the Territory until January 28, 2025, from sunrise to sunset, for President Jimmy Carter. This act is consistent with federal law and directives in recognizing and mourning a dedicated public servant and global statesman, President Jimmy Carter. He also urges owners of private buildings in the Territory to fly their flags at half-staff. Furthermore, commissioners and agency heads are authorized to grant administrative leave to non-essential employees as a mark of respect for James Earl Carter, Jr., the 39th President of the United States, as follows: Thursday, January 9, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The leave granted shall not apply to essential employees, employees on a regular or rotating shift, and employees on annual or sick leave. From January 26 to February 1, 2025, National Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated with the theme “Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community.” This week honors the mission of Catholic schools to foster integrity, compassion, and service by emphasizing values and community commitment. Monday, January 20, 2025, is declared Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This day honors Dr. King’s legacy of advancing equality and social justice. Residents of the Virgin Islands are encouraged to participate in community service, making it a “day of action.” Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., founded on January 13, 1913, promotes academic excellence and assistance to those in need. The St. Croix Alumnae Chapter will celebrate its 50th anniversary on January 25, 2025. Recognized for excellence in social action, this chapter has dedicatedly served the community. Governor Bryan proclaims January 19-25, 2025, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Week, honoring the organization’s commitment to sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action. Governor Bryan’s declarations for January highlight the importance of community, faith, and the continuous pursuit of equality and justice, urging all Virgin Islanders to participate actively in these significant observances.
