ACT NO, 6824 BILL NO. 26-0215 TWENTY-SITXTH LEGISLATURE OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS Regular Session 2006 An Act amending | V.I.C., chapter 11, to declare May 5 of each year “Paws for a Cause Day” —-- WHEREAS, the Virgin Islands has acknowledged animal cruclty as a criminal offense and has taken it scriously by the passing of severe anG-cruelty laws on May 3, 2005; and WHEREAS, the new law makes several acts of cruelty felony offenses. Individuals found guilty of felony offenses may be imprisoned for a period not to exceed three years and may be fined no less than $1,000, but no more than $5,000 for each offense; and WHEREAS, according to statistics provided by the Humane Society of the United States, as of 2003, forty-one states have enacted felony-level penalties for acts of animal cruclty; thirty-three of them in Lhe last ten years; and WHEREAS, the Virgin Islands has been added to the list of forty-one states and territories that currently have felony-leve! …
