Calendars Bi-Weekly Senate Calendar Session Agenda × General Senators Committees Media Calendars Contact Committee on Culture, Youth, Aging, Sports, and Parks The Committee on Culture, Youth, Aging, Sports, and Parks has scheduled a hearing for Thursday, October 5, 2023, 10:00 AM at the Frits E. Lawaetz Legislative Conference Room in St. Croix to receive testimony and updates regarding the 175th Emancipation Commemoration Committee and the Virgin Islands Puerto Rico Friendship Committee. BLOCK I 10:00 A.M. – 11:30 A.M. This hearing will focus on receiving testimony and updates from the 175th Emancipation Commemoration Committee (ECC). The committee will present its annual report on this year’s Emancipation celebration, highlighting successes and challenges, improvements made, and budgetary details, including expenditures. Additionally, the hearing will delve into the progress of archival and digitization projects currently in progress. The ECC will provide insights into their ongoing initiatives in this regard. Furthermore, the committee will discuss plans for the remainder of the year, seeking input and collaboration from stakeholders to expand the Emancipation Celebration and raise awareness. They will also share identified needs and areas where assistance can facilitate the growth of the celebration and its broader impact on public awareness. Invited Testifiers: The Honorable Carol Burke, Chairwoman, 175th Emancipation Commemoration Committee The Honorable Myron Jackson, Former Senator & Board Member BLOCK II 11:30 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. During this hearing, the committee will be hosting special presentations to commemorate the Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico Friendship Day. These presentations will showcase the significance of the friendship between the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. In addition to the special presentations, the committee will receive a comprehensive overview of the Virgin Islands Puerto Rico Friendship Committee. This overview will encompass the committee’s activities, achievements, challenges or obstacles encountered, and the specific needs it has identified. The hearing aims to provide a platform for a thorough understanding of the committee’s role in fostering and maintaining this friendship.
