Oct. 2dih.—A feature of the debate 1n the House of Commons today on the Govt’s. unemployment proposals. was a lively duei between Dr. Addison. ex-Minist2r of Health, and Sir Alfred Mond, the present Minister. Dr. Addi- son \iolently attacked the proposals for providing work and deciared they ‘hud been passed over by toe Premier witn his usual astutenzss, bzscause they were grievously unworgable. He predicted that thore would be absoiute chaos in the administration of relief. He described the Govt. proposals for finding work as being as dead as mutton. Sir Alired Mond retorted that Dr. Addison, whiie Minister in charge of reconstruction in 1917, nad ample opportunity for evolv ng great schemes to relieve unemployment, bus had not brougit forih anything half as zood as the present Govt. were (ro- posing. Minister of Labour, dealing with his section of the Govt. proposal for remedying the unemploy- ment situation by aiding the financiny of public works, stated that 48 applica- tions from 28 local authorities hau al- ready been received. By forestry, drainage and the construction of light railways, the Govt. would endeavour t> cover the case of the agriculiurz] work- ers, who are outside of the provisions of the unemployment insurance act. The Ministrv of Labosur only on Saturday sent ocut a ecircular on this subject, and schemes bhave already been submitted.
