Os the 124 women who will be deported there are 84 from the island of Jamaica, 7 from the Islandof Barbados, 2 trom the islan(gof St. L.cia, b from the island of Trinidad, 19 crom the island of Marti- nique, 5 from tne island of St. lhomaz, and 2 from tae island of Porto Rico.——St. Thomas Bulletin, Oct. 4th. This morning at 9.30, an accident oc- curredin Mr. \Wendel’s garage, where one of his chaffeurs was making some repairs to the engine of an automobile, and for- getting the gascline tank open, put the car in motion, whereby a sparkle got in the tark, and an ignition followed. The flames taen proceeded to a neizhboring car. belonging to Mr. V. A. Miller with the same result. Through the wi: of the young man, the flame was quickly put out, and only the cloth materials of the cars suffered some damage. *St. Thom- as Bulletin Oct. 6th. , CHARCOAL IMPOSITION ON THE PUBLIC RY RETAILERS. We can understand the diificulty in set- ting u» a coai pic asd aiso the danger to health that ean be caused to the coal burners, wao, now, in a justifiable man- ner clamour that the price or their coal should inerease, since the prices of the necessaries of life which give them the bone an@ sinew to serve a community in this resp: et have been more than tripli- cated. In this we uphold the coal burn- ers. but the retailers who sit quietly down, witnout any risk, loss, or other- wise, shouid be controlled in some man- ner and not be allowgd thus to “‘eat out the vitals’’ of the poor. Our suggestion is, as thinos seem still to be abiormal, coal for the present should be piaced in bins for sale.—lbid. For some days past, there has been great unrest among cooks and housewives through not only the searcity, but the in- ability to secure charcoal. This commodity, which for some time past has been givinggrave concern to one and all —esnecially the poor—took on a graver aspect on Saturday, when hardly any of it coukl be ha(f. It wos traly pitiful yesterday, ‘o see the efforts of the poor, cooks and others in their endeavour to secure this much needed coraimodity, and to hear the.r complaints at their non-suc- cess in securing same. ‘Of course, we have heard much said bo.h pro, and con, re this arcicle of char- coal, with the Food Comm:ssion in the background. Through it all, however, there is great dissatisfaction expressed concerning the desite to force th2 hands of the ‘‘coal burners,”” who are disgusted at the way things i\ave beecn, and are still being done by the Food Commission, in the way of regulating the prices of foodstuffs, ect.
