Ist. —The fortress of Brest Litovsk, the stronghold 119 miles east of Warsaw, on the bounda.y of Proper, is reported to have been captured by the Russians, according to a wireless despatch from Berlin tcday. Vienna, Aug. Ist.—A Hungarian force of more than eight hundred armed and upniformed men crossed the Austrian frontier e. rly Friday morning, overpow- ere|p the guards and raided the Furten- field Arsenal, seizing two thousand rifles, two thousand uniforms and twenty-one machine-guns. The raiders returned to Hungary with the booty loaded on motor trucks. The Govt. has protested to the Hungarian Minister demanding the pun- ishment of the raiders, return of the 100 and an apology and payment of dam- ages. It has also communicated the tact to the foreign missions. Nome, Alaska, Aug. 2nd.— Captain “Amundsen’s schnr. Maud, on which the explorer intends to leave in a few days on a trip to the North Pole, arrived here on Saturday from Sledge Island, near Nome, where for two weeks he had been riding SRX AY LS out_a storm. Amundsen, who arrived here a few days ago, plans to spend the next few days provisioning the schooner for a Polar trip. AERO MAIL SERVICE TO SANTO DOMINGO Postal Department At Washington Con- siders Line From Mayaguez To San- .o Domingo City. The proposed aero mail route service between Mayaguez and Santo Domingo City, although not definitely arranged as yet, is being given earnest consideration bv the Post Offiee Department at Wash- ington, and ifplans now under way can be carried out as is anticipated, the ser- vice will be established within ‘two months, Recommendations for the establishing of this aero mail route, were presented to the Post Office Department early this month, by the chief clerk of the railway mail service for Porto Rico, George L. Dederick, and Assistant .Pnstmaster General Praeger was very fawvourably impressed with the plan. : Only one real difficuity presented itself in connection with the recommendation, and that is the fact that the Government has limited the Post Office Department to the privilege of establishing aero mail routes between New York and San Fran- cisco only. In view of this {act Mr. Dederick suggested that this technica'ity of the law might be overcome >y making a contract with the Navy Dep:rtment to take charge of the proposed aero mail route. As the Dominican Government is under control of the U. S. Naval authori- ties it was thought that a tangible ar- rangement could be made by gaining the cooperaticn of thc Naval I'epartment in this matter. No further steps can be take: 1n estab- lishing the service until the Pcst Office Department have fully discussed the matter but there ig reason to helieve that the question will be decided within a short time. The fact that the proposed aero mail route service will not cost any more than it is costing at the present time to run the mail service between Porto Rico and Santo Domingo 1s one strong point in favor of the new plan. The mail service between Santo Do mingo and Porto Rico is very irregular at present. The time required for ecach trip is thirty bhours whiie the cero maii service would cut the time dcwn to three hours and a half frcm Mayaguez, or mail leaving San Juan on the 8:45 train at night wolld reach Santo Domingo City by ten o’clock the next morning. The route was planned from Mayaguez t Santo Dom?)go City because the distance is shorter from Mayaguez by sixty-five miles. The river at the mouth of which Santo Domingo City lies affords a fine landing place for the sea planes at all times.
