DANNY WEAKENS TO A TROPICAL DERESSION, SYSTEM TO PASS SOUTH OF THE USVI Danny has weakened to a tropical depression with the center located near 15.9 degrees North, 61.5 degrees West or about 250 east southeast of St. Croix. Danny continues on a westerly track at 12 miles per hour with top winds of 35 miles per hour. The center of Danny will continue to move across the southern Leeward Islands later this morning and move into the northeastern Caribbean Sea later today. Reports from an Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 35 mph with higher gusts. Further weakening is forecast during the next two days and Danny is expected to degenerate into a remnant low later today. On its current track, Tropical Depression Danny is expected to make its closest point of approach to the Virgin Islands at 1 a.m. Tuesday when the storm center passes some 78 miles to the south of St. Croix. Danny continues on a westerly track at 12 miles per hour with top winds of 35 miles per hour. The center of Danny will continue to move across the southern Leeward Islands later this morning and move into the northeastern Caribbean Sea later today. Reports from an Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 35 mph with higher gusts. At that time Danny is forecast to be a depression with top winds of 35 miles per hour. Rainfall amounts are expected to be in the 2 to 4 inch range across all the islands through Tuesday. Marine conditions expected: 6 to 7 feet with occasional seas up 10 feet and winds between 20 Across the coastal waters, seas are expected mainly between six and eight feet with winds to 20 knots (17 miles per hour). Small Craft Advisories are in effect for all coastal waters. VITEMA Director Mona Barnes is advising the public to remain vigilant until the system moves out the area. “Be mindful that heavy rainfall with potential to cause flooding is forecast for the Virgin Islands with this system,” she said. VITEMA will continue to provide updates on Tropical Depression Danny as more information becomes available.
