Some- time ago we talked about asking Gevern- ment to take over the center lire road, we said then if Government does no! sce its way clear to do so we would do the best we can. Now we have brought in this bill asking for tools te repair our roads, and when repaired, place it under the supervision of the Public Works Offi- cer. There are certain reconstruction work that must be dore on some of the roads. The tools should be furnished and the reeonstruction made. It seems to me that this request is not unreasonable. As to where the money is to come from, it is to come from the Co- lonial Trétsury, from mouey not other- wise obligated. I don’t see that we should be considered unreasonable. I hope that Government will see its way to grant this request. Government Secretary {(Gaffrey) re- marked: Mr. Chairman. 1 welcome the statement of the 4th Appointed Member (Blackwood) because he stuck to the mat- ter under discussior and did not inter- fere in Government’s business on the island. The matter of purchasing a roil- er, scarifier and stone erusher from funds in the Treasury, not otherwise obligated is all right, but that wil]entail some ad- ~ ditiona! expense, and Government wants to knox about the maintenanece which has not been provided for. Again I wish to make it elear that Government is not prepared to muaintain the roads of St. Croix. 4th Appointed Member (Blackwood) ramarked: Mr. Chairman.
