ACT NO. 6'719 BILL NO. 25-0256 TWENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS OF THE UNITED STATES Regular Session 2004 To amend Title 19, chapter 25, Virgin Islands Code to require the Virgin Islands Department of Health to adopt the 2001 Edition of the Food Code, Recommendations of the United States Public Health Service/Food and Drug Administration as published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, Food and Drug Administration ---()--- WHEREAS, ensuring safe food is an important public health priority for our nation as a whole and the Virgin Islands specifically; and WHEREAS, an estimated 76,000,000 illnesses, 323,914 hospitalizations, and 5,194 deaths are attributable to foodborne illness in the United States each year. The estimated cost of foodborne illness is $10 - $83 billion dollars annually; and WHEREAS, for some consumers, foodborne illness results only in mild, temporary discomfort or lost time from work or other daily activity. …
