London, Aug. 2:cd.- Officers of :he Eastern Telegraph Company’s ship, which is repairing a broken cable be- tween St. Hele a and Capetown, report that tke ocean bed hs risen to within three quarters of a mile of the surface at a point where the chart showed the depth to be three miles. The sounding for the chart were token in 1899, the year in which the cable w s laid. The discovery suggests that there has been a recent submarine ¢onvulsion. Pensacola, Flo., Aug. 23rd.—Captain Hill and second Lieut MacFayden, both of the United States Marine Corps, were instantly killed yesterday and first Lieut Richard, also of the Marine Corps, pro- bably fatally injured, when two airplanes crashed in mid-air at an altitude of be- tween 3,000 and 4,000 feet, near the Pen- sacola naval air station. Redding, Calif., Aug. 23rd.- Lassen Peak, which was reported in eruption 0 Tuesday night, was quiet yesterday. g When the peak became visible with the lifting of the mist there was no sign of any disturbance at the erater. Dayton Ohio, Aug. 23rd.--Sarpassing even the wiidest dreams of its designer and other United States air service offi- cials, the Barling Bomber, said to be the world’s largest airplane, completed its maiden flight at the Wilbur Wright field last evening. The ship has a wing spread of 120 feet, is motored by six 450 borse power liberty motors and weighs 40,000 pounds, The fuel tanks, located in the fore part of the fuselage, have a capacity of 2,120 galions. Tle plane cariies seven machine guns and bombs, totalling in weight 12,000 pounds. Regular operating planes call for a crew of six men, two pilots, one observer, one navigator and two gunners. It is the first folane ever to be driven by six liberty engines. London, Aug. 23rd.—Recognizing the futility of a furiher exchange of lesgthy notes on the reparations issue, Mr, Bald- win had decided to meet M. Poincare upon the formers return from his holiduy at Aix-les- Bains, it becamwe known today, The DBritish Premier will not formally ask his French colleague for an appoint- ment, but wiil make krnown quictly, through see>nd parties, his readiness to discuss the whole reparations problem in the light of the French Premier latest note. Mr. Bildwin feels that while in France he should profit by the suggestion contained at the end of M. Poincare’s note that France was ready to discuss the indemnity problem verbaly. It is thought possible Lord Curzan may parti- cipate in this contference, since he plans to remaih for some time in Bagnoiles, where he is at present recuperating.
