FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE VIRGIN ISLANDS SPECIAL OLYMPICS TEAM WINS GOLD AND MORE IN LOS ANGELES (July 30, 2015, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands) The Office of the Governor Americans with Disabilities Act is pleased and honored to announce that our 2015 Special Olympics delegation is doing well at the World Games in Los Angeles, California. Our Special Olympic Bowlers won Two Gold Medals. The Bowling Unified Team won the Gold Medal on July 28th, 2015. Our Unified Gold Medal Team members are: Leroy Johnson, Rachanna Johnson, Briana Samuel and Shabari Williams. The V.I. Delegation also got the Gold Medal in the Bowling Unified Doubles, those team members were Leroy Johnson and Shabari Williams. Unified Sports brings together people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It promotes inclusion through shared training and competition. The principle behind Unified Sports is that by bringing people together you get to understand better and form friendships between those with and without intellectual disabilities. Yazan Abdaljawwad won the Silver Medal in the 50M Backstroke. …

Jahkeil Maynard won the Silver Medal in the Men’s Shot-put. Other athletes placed in the top 10 of their sport. Governor Mapp and Lieutenant Governor Potter offer congratulations to the athletes, their coaches and their families. The Mapp/Potter administration recognizes the courage, commitment and dedication that each member of our Virgin Islands -1- Delegation possess and we honor them and look forward to additional medals being won. -2-
