Susan Drew 8-1 Sugar Mill Hill Condos 770-883-8865 Sedrew53 @‘ aol .com 10/27/2025 Good afternoon my name is Susan and this is my “Speech” for Cruz and Steph: Good afternoon all, I never thought that after all those many Sundays at Magen’s Bay instructing Cruz and Steph the techniques of swimming (per se) that I would be standing here in front of them being honored for saving a life. Cruz was always ready to jump right in, whereas Steph kind of took his own time and eventually joined in. We had fun holding our breath underwater, kicking our feet, moving our arms, trying new things, and never giving up. 11 seemed like every Sunday they were getting a little better and trying a little harder So, on August 11th, 2024, did it really surprise me that they were bringing someone to shore on the back of their surfboard? Not really because they’re quick thinkers, and smart with a good head on their shoulders. Most young boys of that age wouldn’t operate in the manner that these boys conducted themselves. It speaks testament to their Valor and willingness to help. …

Cruz was always ready to jump right in, whereas Steph kind of took his own time and eventually joined in. We had fun holding our breath underwater, kicking our feet, moving our arms, trying new things, and never giving up. 11 seemed like every Sunday they were getting a little better and trying a little harder So, on August 11th, 2024, did it really surprise me that they were bringing someone to shore on the back of their surfboard? Not really because they’re quick thinkers, and smart with a good head on their shoulders. Most young boys of that age wouldn’t operate in the manner that these boys conducted themselves. It speaks testament to their Valor and willingness to help. At that point, we noticed that there was a man holding onto their surfboard. They then informed us that he was drowning, out in the water. Utilizing the skills that they crafted from day one, they jumped into action fearlessly. It’s fair to say that these boys swam before they walked. An, off duty, officer in the group then informed us to contact the Magen’s Bay authority and 911. Due to poor cell phone signal, we collectively made phone calls until we were successful. Fortunately, there was another couple walking up the beach. Upon their walk back down the beach, the female assisted with the situation. This couple was two individuals that were visiting the island. Luckily, the wife happened to be a doctor, so she stepped in with out hesitation to assist. She performed the necessary actions, while we were waiting on other emergency authorities to arrive. The individual was very appreciative of the, readily, available assistance that he received while waiting for the authorities. It’s a blessing that Steph and Cruz were there at the right time and place and knew what to do. I’m sincerely proud of my “Adopted” nephews and I look forward to seeing them growing up.
