ACT NO.64¢ 1 BILL NO. 24-0017 TWENTY-FOURTH LEGISLATURE OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS OF THE UNITED STATES Regular Session 2001 To create a Virgin Islands Commission on Aquaculture and Mariculture to study and develop a comprehensive plan for aquaculture in the U.S. Virgin Islands ---0--- WHEREAS, the waters surrounding the U.S. Virgin Islands are considered to be some of the best and most conducive waters in the world for the development of “aquaculture”, which is defined as the propagation and rearing of aquatic species in a controlled or selected environment, and “mariculture”, which is defined as the cultivation of fish and shellfish in estuarine and coastal areas; and WHEREAS, the year-round climate enjoyed in the U.S. Virgin Islands by virtue of our northem equator location, is considered ideal for aquaculture and mariculture development; and WHEREAS, the development of an aquaculture and mariculture industry in the USS. …
