IV 107TH CONGRESS 1ST SESSION H. CON. RES. 215 Expressing the sense of Congress that a series of postage stamps should be issued to commemorate each of the 50 States, the District of Colum- bia, and the territories of Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Common- wealth of Puerto Rico. IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AUGUST 2, 2001 Mr. UNDERWOOD submitted the following concurrent resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Government Reform CONCURRENT RESOLUTION Expressing the sense of Congress that a series of postage stamps should be issued to commemorate each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and the territories of Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the Com- monwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Whereas the issuance of a series of postage stamps com- memorating each of the 50 States, the District of Colum- bia, and the territories of Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico would increase public awareness of the diversity among the jurisdictions that together form the United States; 2 •HCON 215 IH Whereas it would be appropriate for such a series of postage stamps to be known as the ‘‘E Pluribus Unum series’’; Whereas the United States Postal Service honors a rich vari- ety of historic and cultural figures, events, and places through the issuance of commemorative postage stamps; Whereas the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee deserves to be commended for recommending to the Postmaster Gen- eral subjects for commemorative postage stamps that are both interesting and educational; Whereas the Postmaster General and the United States Post- al Service deserve to be commended for their valuable work in selecting and issuing commemorative postage stamps that are interesting and educational; Whereas the issuance of the E Pluribus Unum series of post- age stamps would, because of its educational value and interesting and collectible nature, generate earnings for the United States Postal Service in addition to serving as a valuable tool in educating the people of the United States about the diversity and contributions of the juris- dictions that form the United States; Whereas such a series of postage stamps would encourage the general public to use, share, and collect memorable keep- sakes of all the States and territories of the United States; and Whereas it is timely and appropriate to issue a series of post- age stamps collectively depicting the flags or other suit- able emblems of all the States and territories of the United States: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate 1 concurring), That it is the sense of Congress that— 2 3 •HCON 215 IH (1) a series of postage stamps should be issued 1 by the United States Postal Service to commemorate 2 each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and 3 the territories of Guam, the Virgin Islands, Amer- 4 ican Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern 5 Mariana Islands, and the Commonwealth of Puerto 6 Rico; and 7 (2) the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee 8 should recommend to the Postmaster General that 9 such a series of postage stamps be issued. 10 Æ
