In nis sp-ech the Chan- cellor of the Exchequer suggested that the commerce of the Empire required all the encouragement and incentive it could be given and impressed upon his hearers the impertance of the excnange of commodities between the different parts of the BEmpire. Mr. Hughes of ‘ Australia spoke of the necessity for im- | provement of communication between | the dominions and the United Kingdom. ! He concluded, ‘‘unless this country can produce coal at a price which will enable it to compete with the rest of the world, Empire exhibition or no exhibition, the greatness of this country must pass away. Seventy working days lost to the natiou and eighteen million pounds of extra expend ture incurred by the Gov- ernment, are the official estimates com pated in connection with the coal strike. The defense force army of reservists cost seven million pounds, and the rail ways claim nine mililon pounds against the state for May alone. New Port, R. 1., July 17th. —The Ha- vard-Yale Laen Tfennis team defeated the Oxford-Cambridge team, five matches to four, by winning four of the six sin- gles matches played jyesterday. 'The Englishmen took two of the three dou- bles matches on Tuesday. New York, July 6th.—There was an Nag 10l advance of 1/8 cent in the local raw sugar market early today, to the basis of 41/8 for centrifugal. There were sales laie yesterday of 25,000 bags of Porto Rico’s toan outport refiner and this morning an zdditional lot of 17,000 bags was sold to a local refiner without port cptions and another lot of 10,000 bags sold to local refiner all for prompt shipment. Refined was firm and un- changed at 5.20 to 5.30 for fine granu- lated, but a much better inquiry is noted and business is reported considerably more gactive. London,July Tth.—The Prime Minister stated in the House of Commons that he was fairly hopeful of being in a position to make a statement concerning the Anglo-Japanese ireaty on Monday next. He added, however, that such a state- ment would depend on the replies receiv- ed from the United States and China. A rremature declaration, Mr. 'Lloyd George asserted, would interfere wi®h t. e success of the negotiations now. ® - Publication. Each debtor of tax will be subject to a fine of Fres. 100 if the tax be under Fres. 25.00 and Fres. 2.00 if the tax be Fres. 25.00 or above, beside the ordinary levy expenses.
