COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT BILL NO. 35-0039 Thirty-Fifth Legislature of the Virgin Islands February 27, 2023 An Act amending title 17, chapter 41 of the Virgin Islands Code, relating to Career Day, to expand Career Day into Career Week in Virgin Islands public high schools PROPOSED BY: Senator Javan E. James, Sr. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the Virgin Islands: 1 SECTION 1. Title 17 Virgin Islands Code, chapter 41 is amended as follows: 2 (a) The chapter heading is amended by striking “Career Day” and inserting “Career 3 Week”. 4 (b) Section 751 is amended: 5 (1) by striking “day” and inserting “week”; 6 (2) by striking “Day” and inserting “Week”; and 7 (2) by designating the existing language as subsection (a) and adding a 8 subsection (b) to read as follows: 9 “(b) The Commissioner of Education shall collaborate with the Department 10 of Labor for Career Week using the most current data from the Workforce 11 Development Board and the Division of Personnel to highlight critical jobs in the 12 2 private sector and the various vacancies in government to be showcased during 1 Career Week. The Commissioner of Education shall invite the University of the 2 Virgin Islands as a representative to encourage and prepare students to take 3 advantage of the free tuition program offered by the University of The Virgin 4 Islands pursuant to section 190dd of this title. The principals, teachers and support 5 staff shall highlight the importance of career readiness throughout the duration of 6 Career Week.” 7 (c) Section 752 is amended: 8 (1) by striking “Day” and inserting “Week”; 9 (2) by striking “in” after “participation” and inserting “on the first day of”; 10 (3) by adding the following sentence at the end of the section to read: 11 “On the second day of Career Week, a panel of members of the Virgin Islands 12 Police Department, the Office of the Public Defender, and the Bureau of 13 Corrections shall present a discussion on the importance of maintaining a clean 14 police record.”; 15 (4) by designating the existing language as subsection (a) and adding 16 subsection (b) to read as follows: 17 “(b) The Commissioner of Education shall invite: 18 (1) all elected officials to visit the students during Career Week; and 19 (2) a group of successful Virgin Islanders to speak to the high school 20 students on career readiness and life skills.” 21 (d) Section 753 is amended: 22 (1) in the first sentence by striking “career day” and inserting “Career Week”; 23 (2) by striking the second sentence; and 24 3 (3) in the third sentence by striking “Day” and inserting “Week”. 1 BILL SUMMARY 2 3 This bill seeks to amend title 17, chapter 41 of the Virgin Islands Code expanding Career 4 Day into Career Week at Virgin Islands public high schools. 5 BR23-0301/January 27, 2023/LMW/Updated by GC 6
