0036-2015 February 2, 2015 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Government House Communication Contacts: Kimberly Jones, Director - 340-332-9282 Samuel Topp, Deputy Director – 340-693-4308 (Please do not publish phone numbers. Thank you.) Governor Mapp Appoints Former Governor Turnbull to the Centennial Commission (St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, February 2, 2015) Today, Governor Mapp Appointed the Honorable Charles Wesley Turnbull, Ph.D. to the Centennial Commission for the Virgin Islands district of St. Thomas. Former Governor Turnbull will replace the seat previously held by Dr. Marilyn Krigger, who resigned from the commission in 2014. The Centennial Commission was established by the Legislature and is responsible for planning the 100th anniversary of the territory's transfer from Denmark to the United States. The “Centennial Celebrations,” slated to take place over the 17- month period from August 2016 to December 2017, commemorates the March 31, 1917, transfer (by purchase for the sum of $25 million dollars in gold -- more than three times the purchase price of Alaska) of the then-Danish West Indies, namely St Croix, St John, and St Thomas, to the United States during the height of World War I. Governor Mapp stated “I would like to thank the Honorable Charles Turnbull, I appreciate his willingness to serve. I know that his interest and experience will be of great benefit to the people of the Virgin Islands” ###
