With reference to the editorial com- ment on the sugar situation, in this pa- per of last Saturday, it is now our pleas- ure to state that we have knowledge that there is at least one merchant who is not taking advantage of the opportunity to profiteer. That mer- chant is Mr. M. A. Pretto. proprietor of the Company Street Emporium who has personally assured us that there is no oceasion whatever for the cutting off of the sugar supply or of increasing the price for the sugar now instock in town, it having been bought at a “rice that per- mits of retailing it at 14 cents as ruled by the Food Commission, witha margin of prcfit. Mr Pretto gave us his word that he is retailing sugar at that price and has at no time refused to do so, nor will he, while his stocks lasts. Furthermore he, as a member of the Food Commission will exercise his ef- forts to have he present price main- tained. In fact the Food Commission has no intention of meeting on that question, and we take pleacure in soin- forming those who would inspire such action. ; LOCAL. The serial picture which is creating such widespread entertainment, will be continued at the theatre this evening, anda comic number will wind up the show as sual. A fuli houseis expect- ed by the management which is doing its best to maintain the high standard of pictures and afford healthy, whole- some .diversion to this part of the is- land. *The Native Brass Band furaished music to the town last night and rend- ered many attractive airs which were duly applauded. Announcement is made »f a letter re- ceived here yesterday advising the death in Copenhagen on March 14th. of Mr. Jeppe Peter Hansen tormer chief clerk in the St Thcemas Office of the Specia - Commissioner for the Danish State. Mr. Haunsen left St. Thomas for De - mark last Spring after being in G vern- ment Service in the Virgin Islancs for nearly 30 years; at the time of his dzath he was clerk in office of the Ministry for. The question is plain enougl® and was never intended to be mutilated by laymen; but here the .potency of the above capcdion is exempli- fied. It is aimed at clearing up whether the .cinnons of the church are just laid aside like old *‘junk,’””and new theories int. oduced without ecclesiastical authori- ty. Perhaps A. T..has never read the cannons of his own church, and 1 would advise that he do so before starting to sling ink in the airand havinz itdrop back in his face. No priest of the Episcopal Church is likely to put rhe authority of the cannons into disrepu‘e which A. T. hes practically done, although he was. cun- ning enough to avaid the quotation of article XXV when making bis other ref- erences. Please let me say here that the discussion of this matter does not consti- tute any attempt to draw anyone into newspaper controversy, but it does seek to establish something like consist=ncy be- tween what we hear from the pulpit and what weread. Here’s a little argument for A.T,; suppose he lived where he could not consult a priest, and read the article in question, and later on he heard some priest say the contrary of it: which would he rely on?
