Sir : I have the honor to inclose a copy of a letter from Dr. A. T. Watt, superintendent of British Columbia Quarantines, conveying the information that 1 case of smallpox was discovered in Victoria, British Columbia, on the 9th ultimo and isolated at once, and that no further case has been found and no source for the contagion. Office of Superintendent of British Columbia Quarantines, Victoria , British Columbia, May 15 , 1898. Dear Doctor : In answer to your inquiry in regard to smallpox in Victoria in your letter of 3d instant, I have to say that 1 case of smallpox is at present in the isolation hospital in Victoria. The case was discovered April 9. They were taking the patient out into the country in a box when the horse ran away, upsetting the wagon and caus- ing the man to yell lustily. This brought the police, and the Chinaman was found to have smallpox. No source has been discovered. The man had been in the county four years. No other cases have developed so far as known. Sir: By direction of the Secretary of State, I have the honor to inclose for your information copy of a dispatch from our minister at Copenhagen, reporting that quarantine has been declared by the Danish West Indies against Puerto Cabello. Sir: I have the honor to inform you that the Government of the Danish West Indies has declared a quarantine of fifteen days against ships arriving at Puerto Cabello on account of the appearance of smallpox at that port.
