ye by) 167 POLICY FORCONFERRING EMERITUS STATUS (Board of Trustees Meeting, June 28, 1981) E. The prodecure for conferring emeritus status on former faculty mem- bers of the College of the Virgin Islands parallels the procedure for granting tenure to members of the faculty. The process will begin on or before March 15 of each academic year and the President will sub- mit a list of candidates eligible (see below) for emeritus status to the Faculty Review Advisory Committee (FRAC). The results of the FRAC deliberations will then be transmitted as in the case of recommendations for tenure. The granting of emeritus status, in accordance with the stated criteria, may be made retroactive to any academic year. Il. Criteria 1. The candidate must have been a tenured faculty member of the College of the Virgin Islands. 2. The candidate must have resigned from full-time active service at the College of the Virgin Islands. 3. <A candidate having held the academic rank of Professor at the Col- lege of the Virgin Islands shall be confirmed as Professor Emeritus, 4. <A candidate with at least fifteen (15) years of full-time equivalent teaching service at the College of the Virgin Islands having held the academic rank of Assistant or Associate Professor shall also be con- firmed as Professor Emeritus. 5. Other candidates shall receive the designation of Faculty Emeritus. 6. The President may waive the criteria relating to academic rank, tenure or years of service for any candidate who, in his/her judgment war- rants special consideration. att. Benefits The Vice-President for Academic Affairs will be given a list of persons elected to emeritus status, and,he/she will inform them of the advantages and responsibilities of the honor and make available to them tose items specified as perquisites. Such benefits shall include the following. 1. An appropriate citation from the College suitable for framing. 2. An Emeritus ID card. C) Policy of Conferring Emeritus Status _ ‘Page 2 tN. The right of utilization of Library and other facilities on and as-avaii@vle basis. Continuance on College of the Virgin Islands mailing lists. Eligibility for College-sponsored group travel plans. Tuition waiver on a space available basis. The right to participate in academic attire at Commencement Exercises and other formal occasions. The right to attend faculty meetings. Professors and faculty emeriti shall have the same rights as their colleagues in active service to apply for and secure grants of research scholarships and fellowships granted by the College of the Virgin Islands. In addition, professors and faculty emeriti shall have the right to use the College of the Virgin Islands as their affiliated institution when ap- plying for such grants and fellowships from national foundations. Also, professors and faculty emeriti shall have the right to ask the administra- tion and department chairpersons for recommendations in support of their applications for such grants and fellowships. Responsibilities To keep the College informed of their current address and professional activities. To cite thes College of the Virgin Islands on all professional publications. To assist, to whatever extent possible, in the recruitment of faculty, staff and students for the College of the Virgin Islands. In general, to act as good-will ambassadors for the College of the Virgin Islands. Philosophy The practice of granting emeritus status to certain former faculty members is prevalent in many American Colleges and Universities. The philosophy underlying this tradition includes a recognition of distinguished service which a teacher may have rendered to the in- stitution over a period of years, and the desire to effect a continuing relation between the former faculty member and the institution to the benefit of both.
