HE President o’ the United States T having designated, Thursday. the 24th November as a day of national thanksgiving, I. Sumner E. W. Kittelle, Governor of *he Virgin Islands of the United States, do solemnly urge upon all the people of the Virgin Islands, on that day, to congregate in their usual places of worship and there to give d ep and sincere thanks, to the Great Giver of All Good, for the manifold blessings, both spiritual and material, which have been showered upon these islands. The ecataclysms of the great world -var passed us by and the after effecis have visited us in triflinz degree as com- pared with our brothers in other countries. We are spared the great inclemencies of weather that bring such suffering to the poor in colder climes and destructive storms have not swepi over our dwell- ings. The very gret probiem of un- employment which at home faces some four million of our countrymen, is to us .reat]y softened and starvation is unknown in our midst. Wea have basked under the most beneficent worldly government that the earth has ever known, while a great European country has suffered untold cruelty and desolation under the tyrant rule of bolshevists. Wars are still rag- ing in places on earth but we reside amidst peace and the transcendent beauties of Nature. Epidemiecs have not come upon us but health conditions con- tinue to improve in our communities. We may all go about our rsspective tasks freely and fearlessly, kunowing that no man may unjustly detain us. Our local problems are not so serious as those of the world at large and all are capable of solution if we banish greed and consider them unselfishly. We have indeed been blessed above many of our fellows and our gratitude should be heartfelt. Spiritually the feeling of brotherly love reigns over us in an unusual degree, and this greatest of soul qualities will, gradu- ally and in the ages to come, prove to e the only possible solution of the present world troubles. Our hearts are Kkindly dispused toward the others of nur com- munity and we have the constant inner urge to serve those less fortunate than ourselves. The spirit of all the people has been intensely patriotic and hearts are religiously inclined to act upon prin- ciple rather than from greed and selfish- ness. Regardless of race or station the spirit of amity actuates us. Here no acial discord has been fomented by evil influence and whether God has called us to serve our lives in the Nordie, the La- tin or the Slav race or has, perhaps, in the vast domiciled our ancestors in the - ! 9 £ 1 £ b 111 X a5 1 & continents of Asia or Africa, we are alike men and women pursuing the same spiral patnway, ever onward and upward ander Yis Divine Guidance and in ac- cordance with His Far Seeing Plan. We on earih, do not iove our own children whe are in a lower class ¢t school any less than those in a high-r class and so we foel constrained to beiieve that in the eyes of the Infinite, we are all but as ckil- dren, some in a higher class and some still in a lower oue, bur alike children of the same Loving Father, and all alike destined to come at last into His King- dom.
