On the St. Croix campus the theme for the day’s events was, “UVI Remem- bers 9/11.” The blowing of the conch shell announced the commencement of a minute of silence at the exact times of the four attacks one year ago (8:45, 9:03, 9:43 and 10:10 a.m.) in remembrance of the victims and the attacks’ global im- pact. The 4th Annual Installation of the Student Government Association Offic- ers Ceremony coincided with the re- membrances and was held in the court- yard of the Melvin H. Evans Center. About 75 people gath- ered in the courtyard to participate in the ceremony. Sopho- more Senator Christine Holmes delivered the introductory re- marks. “Today is a day for us to bow our heads and honor and remember the thousands of our fellow citizens who innocently lost their lives because they lived in a system in which we all believe. Today is a day for us to bow our heads and honor and remember the hundreds of our fellow citizens who lost their lives because they, with utmost courage and without delay, fled to the aid of their fellow citizens who had befallen such misfortune. Today is a day for us to continue to think about, give thanks to and pay tribute to our thousands of men and women in uniform sacrificing and risking their lives this very second, in order to maintain our national liberty, independence and sovereignty... because they too believe passionately in the system in which we all live,” Holmes said. Gerard Emanuel, the keynote speaker, told the students that they have a civic responsibility as leaders. He said that while they take on local leadership roles, they must also think of their roles in a global perspective. A student activities fair also took place in the courtyard, with the flags of the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands displayed at each table. Throughout the day, members of the Golden Key International Honor Society distributed red, white, blue and gold lapel “peace” pins and bookmarks with inspi- rational sentiments of unity. The theme for the events on the St. Thomas campus was, “We Remember 9/11 . . . A Tree Planting for Peace.” The tree planting and commemorative ceremony began at 8:30 a.m., with a mo- ment of silence at 8:45 a.m., the time when the first of four hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center. The lignum vitae, which produces one of the densest woods in the region, was planted on the hillside below the Chancellor’s Office on the St. Thomas campus. It was surrounded with red and white bougainvilleas and several small American flags. UVI’s President Dr. LaVerne Ragster, Chancellor Dr. John Leipzig and student representatives made remarks. President Ragster in her address to the entire UVI com- munity said, “Even though millions of people are mourning the deaths of thousands and the loss of a way of living, it’s impor- tant for all of us to understand that we are privileged to be alive. We need to take the time to work out the lessons that have been forced on us as a country and as a people. . . I ask that you treasure the privilege of life and share the best of your humanity with the world as we go forward. Please re- member the lessons of history. Cleave to the positive side of your humanity and walk in peace.” Student Government Association (SGA) members are solemn as they remember the first anniversary of the September 11th ter- rorist attacks on the United States. New SGA members were also installed in a spe- cial ceremony on September 11.
