Education is easily one of the most important factors in voting. It's clear in everything that education on a topic influences opinions, even if that influence is small. A study done by Eric Mintz of Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1998, shows that in 1990, non-university students had an average rate of their attitudes towards democracy coming in at 8.1%, tying with university students. While in 1992, non-university students' average scores dropped to a 7.8%. At the same time, university students dropped to 7.9%. Mintz also conducted several other studies, including Attitudes by Number of Social Science Courses Taken. In this study, Mintz concludes that university students with no social science courses in 1990 scored an average of 7.8%, while in 1992, they scored 7.4%. University students with only one Social Science Course in 1990 scored an average of 8.2%, while in 1992, they scored an average of 8.0%. Dropping 0.2%, University students with more than one Social Science Course in 1990 scored an average of 2 VéNiya Callwood Grade 9 Lucinda Prosterman Virgin Islands Montessori School and Peter Gruber International; academy February 21, 2023 Works Cited “Statistics | Elections System of the VI.” Elections System of the Virgin Islands, https://www.vivote.gov/elections/statistics. In conclusion, studies show that education on democracy can positively influence votes, even if that influence is slight. Outreach involves using your voice to promote and communicate your ideas effectively. This involves using social media, which is very popular in this millennium, promoting campaigns, etc. Outreach helps people to stay engaged with a community that seems like there are only old men in office. Outreach helps to educate the youth, particularly about the effects that they can have on our island's government. Youth outreach is one of the most important things. Youth outreach is targeted toward young adults aged 18 to 25. For reference, 25 is when your brain is fully developed. Educating the brain in those years is critical as brain development slows down. While it is critical to target these young adults, it is just as important to start teaching from a young age. Some things to do with kids in school include hosting mock elections, which can be for the class president, class secretary, class treasurer, etc. I used to do this with my class in 4th to 6th grade. These outreach activities should engage the children or young adults, targeting their hobbies and strong suits. 3 VéNiya Callwood Grade 9 Lucinda Prosterman Virgin Islands Montessori School and Peter Gruber International; academy February 21, 2023 Works Cited “Statistics | Elections System of the VI.” Elections System of the Virgin Islands, https://www.vivote.gov/elections/statistics. Accessed 21 February 2023. Registering to vote is undeniably the most important puzzle regarding Youth Voting. Statistics found on the vivote.gov website show that 2,512 young adults are registered to vote under different parties. Whether Democratic, Republican, Independent Citizen Movement or No party at all. In conclusion, People under 18 can not vote, but they can influence it by educating young adults, using social media as a form of outreach, and encouraging adults to register and vote if they haven't already.
