RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS To honor and recognize the service and contributions of Dr. Orville Kean, President of the University from 1990-2002 WHEREAS, Dr. Orville Kean has served the University with dedication and commitment for more than thirty six (36) years; and WHEREAS, Dr. Kean has served as an exemplary President of the University of the Virgin Islands from 1990 to 2002, numbering among his accomplishments the reaffirmation of the accreditation of the University, the successful recovery of the University from two major hurricanes, the introduction of new degrees and academic programs to better meet the needs of the community, the launching of the Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders in the Caribbean, the emergence of the University of the Virgin Islands as a regionally recognized institution of higher learning in the Caribbean, the major expansion of grant and contract funding from the local and federal governments and foundations, the reorganization of the University into campuses, the building of residence halls and anc …

RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS To honor and recognize the service and contributions of Dr. Orville Kean, President of the University from 1990-2002 WHEREAS, Dr. Orville Kean has served the University with dedication and commitment for more than thirty six (36) years; and WHEREAS, Dr. Kean has served as an exemplary President of the University of the Virgin Islands from 1990 to 2002, numbering among his accomplishments the reaffirmation of the accreditation of the University, the successful recovery of the University from two major hurricanes, the introduction of new degrees and academic programs to better meet the needs of the community, the launching of the Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders in the Caribbean, the emergence of the University of the Virgin Islands as a regionally recognized institution of higher learning in the Caribbean, the major expansion of grant and contract funding from the local and federal governments and foundations, the reorganization of the University into campuses, the building of residence halls and ancillary facilities on St. Croix, the construction of the Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas, the approval of legislation authorizing the establishment of the University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park as a vehicle for social and economic transformation of the Virgin Islands; and WHEREAS, President Kean has served the broader academic family with distinction as President of the Association of Caribbean Universities and Research Institutes (UNICA) for two consecutive terms (May 1995-November 1999), and as an active member of boards and commissions of several professional organizations; and WHEREAS, in his speeches, presentations and writings, President Kean has made numerous contributions to academic inquiry and the advancement of the literature in various fields including the fields of mathematics, education, culture, economic development and leadership; and : WHEREAS, President Kean has received numerous citations and academic and community honors for his accomplishments and contributions to the Virgin Islands including an honorary doctoral degree in science by his alma mater, Lincoln University (1994), the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow Award (1998), the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce Wilbur "Bill" LaMotta Community Service Award (2002), and being featured in “Profiles of Outstanding Virgin Islanders” and the Martin Luther King Memorial Library; and WHEREAS, the sum of Dr. Kean’s service to the University, his accomplishments as President, his civic and community leadership, his contributions as a scholar, and professional memberships on various boards and commissions are all a credit to him, his family, the University and the people of the Virgin Islands. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands acknowledges, commends and honors Dr. Orville Kean for his outstanding service to the University, the people of the Virgin Islands and Caribbean and, in recognition thereof, hereby confers upon him the status of President Emeritus with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities pertaining thereto effective upon retirement.
