Vialet. The students are going to create a music video using still pic- tures, he said. It’s one of the projects the 14 students in YMW will undertake during the seven-week program. Those smaller projects lead up the major production that the students create and produce. In its fifth year, the YMW’s mis- sion is to encourage young people to develop their creative potential through effective use of media technology for education, informa- tion, recreation and career oppor- tunities. Students learn the basic camera techniques – including composition and framing, along with lighting, editing, acting, directing, scriptwriting and Tamisha Davis works on an editing exercise at the Reichhold Center for the Arts Youth Moviemaking Workshop. It’s tee time at the Carambola Golf and Beach Resort where the Founda- tion for the Univer- sity of the Virgin Is- lands is hosting its first Celebrity Golf Classic July 14-17. Celebrities from the NFL, the NBA and the entertainment industry are participating in this four-day, star-studded event in support of the Foundation’s endowment. Local golfers are invited to join the fun and participate in the tournament. The costs are $120 per individual and $300 for groups of three. Sepctators pay $30 to watch the tournament and attend the awards ceremony and barbeque buffet. “The UVI Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic is an excel- lent opportunity to bring visitors to the territory in support of education,” said Joseph B. Along with Vialet, guest lecturers are invited to address the students. “It’s a stepping stone to what I plan to pursue after high school,” said YMW student Tamisha Davis. A high school senior, Davis plans to study the performing arts in college. Twelve-year-old Alfredo Hodge wants to be a technician and actor. The YMW is the perfect place for him to learn the basics, he said. years to come.” The events began with a welcome reception on July 14. On July 15, several of the celebrities will participate in golf practice and clinics, and a press conference. The day culmi- nates at the resort with dinner and a fashion show featuring the designs of Alejandra Jackson. Vocalist Sarah J. Fox will perform. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. on July 16. The Youth Moviemaking Workshop is one of the many summer activities taking place at UVI. Other summer pro- grams include: Upward Bound, Family Life Center, Summer Science Enrichment Academy, Intellect to STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and the College Business Residency Program. Moviemaking Continued Divi Carina Bay Resort. An after party featuring the P’Your Passion band and deejay Tony T of 105 Jamz will be held from 10 p.m. in the Dolphin and Palm Rooms of the Divi. Golf Classic Continued A reggae lover’s fantasy will come true on July 22 and 23 when Big Ship Inc., King of Kings Promotions and the Reichhold Center for the Arts present, “Rock Steady Meets Reggae.” The concert will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 22, at the Randall “Doc” James Racetrack on St. Croix and at 8 p.m. on Satur- day, July 23, at the Lionel Roberts Stadium on St. Thomas. In celebration of the 113th birthday of H.I.M., Emperor Haile Selassie the 1st of Ethiopia, some of the most influential and powerful reggae, ska and rock- steady artists come together in “Rock Steady Meets Reggae.” Artists to perform include Freddie McGregor, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, George Nooks, Iley Dread, Richie Stephens and the Virgin Islands’ very own Pressure, all backed by the Millennium Band.
