Page 22, Analytical Program: If Ciemic Laboratory is not going to perform the analyses, then the new laboratory must be identified. Page 24, Quality Control Check Samples: For TPH, the laboratory QC samples per 20 samples or SDG are as follows: 1 spiked blank (LCS) 1 matrix duplicate-one extra liter of sample required 1 matrix spike-one extra liter of sample required 1 method blank Table 0: Create a table listing each location for groundwater and subsurface soil samples. Will any of the existing wells found on figure 3 be sampled? Make this table consistent with the text and the appendices. REGION II FORM 132O-1 (9/85) TUT OQ£. *64918* 64918 -2- Table l: 1. Make sure the numbers of samples are accurate and consistent with the new table and the text. 2. For TPH in water, two extra liters will be required per SDG for MD/MS analysis. Extra volume will not be required for TPH in soil, the volume in one 8-oz bottle is sufficient. 3. Extra volume for VOA in soil is not required for MS/MSD, the volume in two 40-ml vials is sufficient. 3. For TPH in soil, the sample must first be extracted according to SW-846 (3rd Ed.) Method 9071, performing steps 7.1 through 7.11. Analyze the extract according to MCAWW Method 418.1, resuming with step 7.6. Table 4: 1. For VOA samples, collect two 40-ml vials for each water and soil sample. 2. For TPH in soil, collect one 8-oz glass jar for each sample. 3. For TPH in water, collect one 1-liter glass bottle for each sample. 4. TPH samples in water must be acidified in the field with 1:1 hydrochloric acid to pH<2 (approx. 2 ml). 5. See both comments for Table 3. Appendix B: 1. The first paragraph is not consistent with page 17, which doesn't mention borings B-ll and B-12. 2. 1.7- What are the criteria for field observations and field GC results that must be met before deciding a sample goes to the laboratory for analysis? TUT OO6 19OO -3- Appendix C: 1. 3.3- Prepare a fresh calibration standard daily, instead of one per week. 2. 3.4- Run a calibration check at least every two hours. Appendix E: 1. 2.1 & 2.2- Screens and casings are to be threaded, enabling the lengths to be joined without adhesives or solder. 2. 2.1, 2.2, 2.3- Use a tremie pipe to apply the sand pack, bentonite seal and cement/bentonite grout. Appendix F: 1.4- Install stainless steel casings to bedrock, instead of carbon steel casings. Carbon steel is unacceptable. Appendix 6: 1. The first paragraph is not consistent with Figure 3. Where are MWs 11, 12 and 13 on the figure? I see only deep wells at this location. 2. 2.0- Wells must be sampled within 3 hours of purging. 3. 2.6- TPH samples must be acidified with 1:1 HC1 to pH<2 (approx 2 mis). Appendix Is 1. 1.1.3- Field replicate samples are required for soil samples, at a rate of one per 20 samples. 2. 1.2- All blanks are to be acidified in the same manner as the environmental samples. 3. 1.2.1- Equipment blanks are required for soil samples-. Collect a daily rinse of the split spoon. 4. 1.2.2- The sampling team must prepare the trip blanks daily. Trip blanks supplied by the laboratory must not be used, as holding times on these blanks will be exceeded. 5. 1.3.3- Two TPH samples per SDG must be collected in double volume (or one sample per SDG in triple volume) for the MD/MS analyses. TUT OO6 19O1 -4- 6. 1.2.3- The deionized water used for field and trip blanks must be found to be free of VOA and TPH contaminants. Have the water analyzed immediately prior to beginning field activities. 7. 2.5- Ship all samples within 24 hours of collection via an overnight courier. This ensures the samples will arrive at the laboratory before the cooler ice can melt and the samples become warm. TUT O06 1902
