London, Aug. 25th.—As generally ex- pecied, the bye-election yesterday in the constituency of Caerphilly, in the mining districts of Wales, resulted in the return of Mr. Morgan Jones. (Lahourite), whose vote was 13,699, as compared with 8,953 for Mr. Edwards, (Liberal) and 2,592 for Mr. Robert Stewart, (Communist). The only question in regard to the voting was as to how far the vote for Stewart would split with that for Jones to the benefit of the Liberal candidate. The bye-election in Caerphilly was made necessary by the deatin of Mr. Alfred Onions, (Labogii..,, who. in the last generai elections was elected by a vote of 11,496, against Mr. Edmonds vote 9,482, London, Aug. 25th. -A Reuter des- pateh from Paris states that the French Federations has accepted an invitation of the Australian anl New Zealand rug- ny union t 0 send a representative team in 1922 to play a series of International games in Australia. The team sails next May. The French union is now in com- munication with Ceylon and South Africa, with a view to arranging match es in these countries on the outward veyage. On the returr journey the team will eross Canada and will probably play a series of games in that country. Pride in the acquisition of fne new ‘‘Queen of the air’’ and hopes of a tremendous de- velopment in military and commercial aeronautics, had lent interest to the plan for trans-Atlantic flight of the Brit- ish-built air-craiser, even beyvond that which it would normally have aroused. Qutside sugars were quoted at 4 50 for centrifugal, ,while the Ciban quoutation was 3% cents, cost and freight, equal to 4.86 for centrifugal. Trading in raw sugar futures was very quiet. Prices at midday were one point lower, to three net higher. In refined one local refiner reduced list prices to the basis of 5.85 for fire granulated, for hard grades. Prices now range from 5.80 to 6.00. Refined futures weaere steady on cover- ing with prices uncnanged to 10 points highzar.
