Z9u.—Mr. Ma- caulay, yesterday, delivered an address before the Canadian Manufacturers As- socia ion, which was followed by a reso lution asking the Dominion (Govt to en- quire of the West Indian Governments how it was possible for these t vo parts of the Emoire to assist each other by increasingco operation. Mr. Macauiay’s subject was “*Canada and the West In- dies’’. He said it was virtually necessary nat the different parts of ‘he Empire su .ut | co-cperate, otherwise it would be long bhefor:2 the United States would be the owin~rs of much of the Empire, and he declared that various parts of the Em- pire would foria a sort of partnership and buy as much as possible from each other, they wouid owe less to the United States and have a lower rate of ex- change. Milan Jaa. 29th.—Further surprising developmerits are reported in connection with the Fiame affiair. The Government despatched a steamer with stores for the army of occupation in Albania, but, in- stead, she proceeded to Fiune, where Gabriel D’Annunzio seizea the cargo and two million lire which the War Office in- tended for the payment of the Albanian troops. D’Annunzio justifies his act of sequestration on the ground of the ex- treme necessity of his followers, who are clamouring for their pay.
