With reference to comment 1n yester- day’s issue on the playing of the Navy Band it has been brought to attention that the waltz to which allusion was made was not a waltz after all, but a serenade. As a matter of fact opinion differs even in the band as to which it is but at all events it is represented as hav- ing been intended for a serenade and under those circxnstances we witharaw any criticism tha® may be out of place in that special case. However, ther: can be little question about it that the Na- tional Anthem is being played with only one third the vivacity it used to be, and so slow as it is never written, -to our knowledge. Perhaps we are wreng, but we agree with the feeling that much of the triumphant gusto of the national air is sacrificed when rendered so slow- ly. Mr [La Bega recalls his notice con- cerning the manufacture of ice from spring-water he having been able to se- cure enough rain-water to continue with that for some time yet. The Polish forces breaking the desperate resistance of the Bolshe- viki, have annibiiated the third and twelfth enemy divisions and occupied several towns with heavy losses to the enemy.
