ACTNO. 7527 BILL NO. 30-0134 THIRTIETH LEGISLATURE OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS Regular Session 2013 An Act to make the Queen Conch Shell the official sea shell of the Virgin Islands ---0--- WHEREAS, Conch, pronounced as Konk, is an invertebrate classified under the phylum mollusca, and it feeds on algae and plant decay dwelling in clear water reef habitat in sea grass beds; and WHEREAS, there are several types of conch that have been found in the Virgin Islands, such as the Florida Fighting Conch (Strombus Alatus), the West Indian Fighting Conch (Strombus Pugilis), the Hawk Wing Conch (Strombus Raninus), the Milk Conch (Strombus Costatus) and the Queen Conch (Strombus Gigas), which is one of the largest aquatic snails in the world and the most popular in the Virgin Islands; and WHEREAS, the Queen conch has been a food source for the earliest inhabitants of the Virgin Islands, at the Ciboney sites dating back to about 2000 B.C. and Taino sites dated about 1000 A. …
