If you want the saj- ary of the Judge of the District Court re- duced, the thing to dois, of course, to change the Code. This business of mak- ing it impossible for Government to ob-y the law in this case is, I think, an eatire- ly luntair and unreasouable position to put the Government in. POLICE & PRISON DEPARTMENT: Ist Member for Frederiksted Town (Jackson) remarked: Mr. Chairman. | want to make a remark on Item 9 under this department.—glools, clubs, badzes, ete.. I want to know how many clubs, tools and badges were lost, stolen ov broken last year that we must provide them again this year? Before dis- cassicn bezins on this item, here 15 a situation that I think is even mueh hard- er than the department which we bhave just voted on. I just want to bring to the notice of membo-rs that the number of sergeants have been reduced I[rom five to six: we are about to pass the budi- get and [ know there are six sergeunts in the force. It is pretty hard that at such a short notice a man should be put out of his job; in a few hours from now the axe will fall and he (willbe put out of bread. I therefore make an =ppeai that one sergeant more be provided for on the buldget. As it seems that it is not so absolutely necessary to reduce the budeet as was thougzht 1 move that nne more sergeant be added to the bud- get at rs. 3,240.
