Sir : I have the honor to inform you that in a dispatch dated the 9th instant the minister of the United States at Copenhagen reports that owing to the appearance of yellow fever at Paramaribo, Dutch Guiana, the government of the Danish West Indies has declared a quarantine of five days against ships arriving from that port. Respectfully, John Hay, Secretary of State . Hon. Secretary of the Treasury. ENGLAND. Reports from Liverpool. Liverpool, England, April 12 , 1902 . Sir : I have the honor to state that for the week ended April 12, 1902, there were reported to the medical officer of health for Liverpool, of smallpox, 2 cases; enteric fever, .17 ; scarlet fever, 99 ; diphtheria, 25, and measles, 33. Since January 1, 1902, there have been reported in Birkenhead (a corporation situated on the other side of the Mersey River, directly opposite Liverpool), 12 cases of smallpox. On April 10, 1902, I visited the steamship Sagamore , of the Warren Line, and vaccinated those of the officers, crew, and cattlemen who could not show satisfactory vaccination marks, and to-day did the same to the officers, crew, and cattlemen of the steamship Indore , belonging to the Johnstone Line.
