Lieutenant Ernest L. Ackiss, Chap'ain Corps, U. S. Thomas, effective 30 July, 1923, vice Lieutenant Walier L. Steiner, Chaplain Corps, U. S. Navy, detached. 1 August, 1923. San Francisco, 31 July, 1923.—1 t was announced today that President Hard- ing had won the first skirmish in his fight against Broncho Pneumoria which was discovered to have set in last night. The President had a fairly comfortabie night. His temperature at 9a. m. was 100, pulse 120 and respiration 40. There has been no extension of the Pneumonia and the heart action is definitely improv- ed. He expresses himself as feeling better and less exhausted after "a night during which his condition was described as being grave. The President’s Doctors were eneouraged by the fact that he slept six hours. Dr. Sawyer, his per- sonal physician, in an individual state- ment said condition seemed to warrant the belief that he hal gotten into clear sailing characteristics and that §the Pre- sident is helping the Doctors (by his cheerful disposition. When they took an X'ray of his lungs, he said: ‘'Go ahead Ihave nothing to coneceal’”’. To- day he had the morning paper brought to him and later he was said to be rest- ing. He is quartered in Palacea Hotel, Eight Fioor. The Navy Press News received yes- terday state that President Harding will be rushed back to Washington by spacial train as soon as he has suficiently recov- ered from illness, and that he was con- fined to sickroom with four doctors in attendance. His conditicn is due to his having temporarily overstrained the car- dio vascular system by carrying on his speaking engagements waile ill. President Harding on the Kzad o Recovery. W. 1 & P.
