June 12 U.S. Virgin Islands  — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. issued the following statement today on the passing of Avelino Samuel, a master craftsman, educator, and beloved son of St. John: “I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the entire St. John community as we mourn the loss of Avelino Samuel. Avelino was more than an artist. He was a teacher, a mentor, and a quiet force for good whose work touched lives across the Virgin Islands and beyond. His talent for woodturning was matched only by his humility and his deep love for our culture and our people. From the classrooms of Julius E. Sprauve School to exhibitions around the world, Avelino carried the spirit of St. John with him. He taught us that beauty can come from simple things, and that craftsmanship, care, and community go hand in hand. We have lost a cultural icon, but we will always remember the way he made us feel—proud of who we are and where we come from. May he rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire us all.” # # # TAGS No tags CATEGORIES Uncategorized Previous Next Comments are closed © 2026 Government of the United States Virgin Islands.
